Momma Needs a Minute

Why do I love Mondays?

Growing up, I loved reading all the Garfield comics I could get my hands on. My dad had quite the collection in book form. And I’d steal the comic section whenever we had a Sunday paper laying unattended.

One of the things that makes this orange cat so popular and relatable is how much he hates Mondays. Can’t say as I blame him. It’s usually the start of another long unpleasant week at school or work.

However, the thought of going to bed dreading the next day, waking up to already be upset at said day, then go through the day wishing it was over already… yuck. That doesn’t sound very pleasant at all.

I decided to fix this mindset and do my family and myself a huge favor ( you know the saying, “If mama ain’t happy….) So I thought about it for awhile. At first, there wasn’t much to do about it because I had a job outside the home. Then I was a stay at home mom of a baby and toddler- in which case EVERY day feels like a Neverending Monday!

I came up with my initial idea of just finding something to be happy about every Monday. Anything would count, no matter how big or small. When I had to be at work bright and early, I’d be sure to splurge and get myself a drive thru coffee instead of making it at home. What a treat! At the time, I had not quite mastered my preferred coffee taste at home. Once I became a stay at home mama of two rambunctious little girls, I began looking for one special thing that each girl did that day. Then I would be sure to tell someone else what cute or funny thing they did.

Several years later, we are in a different season and I’m thankful for the blessing to have a flexible schedule. Our Mondays are the equivalent to most people’s “Saturday.” don’t touch school work (unless some catching up needs to be done, then we do some light work). Chores are not enforced, including my own! I allow myself to break from dishes or laundry. Unless, like the schoolwork, the sink is overflowing or we need clean clothes from the laundry pile. Sleeping in, a leisurely breakfast and an overall relaxing day makes for a pretty good Monday every week!

About a year ago, I had to lecture myself over my Mondays. I enjoyed them so thoroughly, that I actually got frustrated and annoyed that I had to schedule something to (gasp!) be PRODUCTIVE. Like leave my house and plan something to do at a certain time. It affected my mood and day so much, I knew I needed to revamp AGAIN. This time, it wasn’t anything outward, but rather on the inside. I had to check myself here.

“This is the day which the LORD hath made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.”(Psalm 118:24 KJV)

There is a song that goes with this Bible verse that I learned at a very young age and it came to me near the end of that particularly frustrating Monday. From then on, I’ve decided to make the most of EVERY day. To thank God for another day when I wake up, and look for something good in that day. I also gave myself permission to have a different day during the week to be our “Saturday” if Monday for some reason can’t work out.

And that, my friends, is why I love Mondays. The possibilities are endless. Each day is exciting for a different reason. Monday has it’s own unique potential every week.
